Loving Naturals is a natural products company created out of the desire to provide safe and natural products for our family and yours!
The burden of toxins in our bodies today can be overwhelmingly heavy. Water, food, vaccines, medications, skin care products and more are often tainted with dangerous chemicals and preservatives. As new parents in 2005, my husband and I found ourselves earnestly researching how to provide the safest and healthiest environment for our baby and lower the burden of toxins she would have to carry. We started by eating organically grown foods, cloth diapering, treating sickness naturally and using natural cleaning products and skin care products.
Choosing natural skin care products was very important to us, specifically sunscreen because of how often it needed to be applied and the concern we had for the ingredients being absorbed into our babies skin. We found that many of the so called "natural products" didn't seem so natural after reading a long list of unexplained ingredients that we had never heard of or could not pronounce. We would often use a product that we thought was safe and find out later it contained a harmful ingredient. We also learned that companies can disguise a chemical as simply "fragrance" and can actually omit "key" ingredients on the label if they have been "proven" safe. This prompted us to start our own company, Loving Naturals, created out of the desire to use the most safe and natural products on our children and provide consumers with a product they could trust. Loving Naturals SPF 30+ Sunscreen
We are very proud to offer you the sunscreen we created after we were unable to find a product safe enough to use on our own children. It contains 100% Natural/ Organic Ingredients. It provides superior UVA and UVB protection and is water resistant for 40 minutes. This mineral based sunscreen is also a non-greasy lotion, rich in free radical fighting anti-oxidants and vitamins. We hope you love it as much as we do!
As a result of our use of a non-nano zinc oxide particle size, our sunscreen has a slight white tint to it. This is very helpful in applying to your children and yourselves so that you can see if you have missed any spots.
Active Sunscreen Ingredient:
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide 24.8%
Ingredients: Grape Seed Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides (derived from Coconut Oil), Soy Wax (Non-GMO), Organic Sesame Oil, Organic Plum Kernel Oil, Candelilla Wax, Organic Cocoa Butter (Fair Trade), Organic Hemp Seed Oil, Organic Macadamia Nut Oil, Organic Cocoa (Fair Trade), Organic Green Tea, Sea Salt, Water
Directions: For full protection, apply a generous white coat to all exposed skin 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, then rub in to reduce whitening effect. Reapply every 1-2 hours or as needed. Reapply at least every 40 minutes when in the water and after sweating or towel drying. Children under 6 months of age: ask a doctor.
Warnings: For external use only. Contains nut and seed oils. Do not use if allergic. Stop use and ask a doctor if skin rash occurs or persists. Rinse with water if sunscreen gets in your eyes. Decrease UV exposure by limiting time in the sun, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen.
Be extra dilligent with reapplication if you burn easily, are near or in the water, or outside during peak sun hours.
Definitions/Background Information
Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
The SPF is a measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UVB (the ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn).
The SPF indicates the time a person with sunscreen applied can be exposed to sunlight before getting sunburn, relative to the time a person without sunscreen can be exposed. This assumes constant solar intensity over the time period. On any day, someone who would burn after 12 minutes in the sun would expect to burn after 120 minutes if protected by a sunscreen with SPF 10. Protection from a particular sunscreen depends on factors such as the skin skin type of the user, amount applied and frequency of re-application, and activities of user such as swimming.
There is no good clinical measurement for blockage of UVA radiation, but it is important that sunscreen block both UVA and UVB. Zinc oxide is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber, better than any other physical or chemical sunscreen. (1)(2)
UVA is Ultraviolet-A long wavelength light with a range of 320 - 400 nanometers.
UVB is Ultraviolet-B medium wavelength light with a range of 280 - 320 nanometers. (UVB is partially absorbed by the ozone layer.)
UVC is Ultraviolet-C short wavelength light with a range of 100 - 280 nanometers (UVC is extremely dangerous but entirely absorbed by the earth's atmosphere.)
Visible Light is within the range of 400 - 700 nanometers and may cause some free radical damage. (3)
Zinc oxide provides coverage between 290-700 nm.
UVA/UVB and Harmful Effects
UVA and UVB can damage collagen fibers, accelerate aging of the skin and can destroy vitamin A in skin, which may cause further damage. In humans, prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eyes, and immune system.
UVA radiation is responsible for the indirect DNA damage to skin (free radicals and oxidation reactions) and causes the most deadly form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma. It penetrates deeply but it does not cause sunburn and therefore cannot be measured in SPF testing.
UVB radiation is responsible for the direct DNA damage to skin that leads to sunburn and skin cancer. (3)
Free Radicals are any atoms or molecules that have a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. For most biological structures, free radical damage is closely associated with oxidative damage. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes. (4)
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. (5)
Anti-oxidants are molecules capable of slowing or preventing oxidative damage to biological structures by removing free radicals and preventing oxidation reactions. (5)
Emollient is an ingredient that moisturizes, smoothes, softens and sooths the skin.
Emulsifier is an ingredient that helps to combine two liquids such as a water-based liquid and oil. (6)
Essential Fatty Acids are powerful anti-inflammatories, act as emollients for the skin and contribute to water resistance of sunscreen.

Active Ingredient
Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano, .12 Microns, physical, mineral sunscreen from naturally occurring zinc ore)
We have researched this ingredient extensively. It is the only ingredient we have found that effectively provides superior protection against UVA and UVB and which we feel comfortable using on our children. Zinc oxide has a long history of use as a safe sunscreen agent, skin protectant, and as a treatment for skin disorders. It is also widely known as the main ingredient in most diaper rash creams and is considered safe for use on infants and sensitive skin.
The zinc oxide we use in our sunscreen is NOT nanoparticle and measures at 120 nanometers or .12 microns.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is an emollient and essential fatty acid derived from coconut oil (skimmed off the top of heated oil). It contributes to the excellent stability of the sunscreen and is noted for its anti-microbial, antifungal properties. (14)
Soy Wax is an emulsifier and contributes to the water resistance of the sunscreen. Non-GMO, biodegradable, and free of pesticides and herbicides.
Macadamia Nut Oil is an emollient rich in essential fatty acids. It has a high oxidative stability making it especially suitable for sunscreen. USDA Certified Organic (20)
Sesame Oil is an emollient rich in essential fatty acids. It is considered to be an excellent oil for young skin to help control acne and maintain a healthy complexion as well as for use on infants skin. Rich in vitamin E, an excellent preservative.
Cocoa Powder is rich in anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals which can help to protect the skin from pollution and free radicals, encourage cell growth, and aid in overall skin health. It smoothes the skin and is a natural colorant.
Fair Trade and USDA Certified Organic
Candelilla Wax is an emulsifier and contributes to the water resistance of the sunscreen. The candelilla wax we use is handpicked from the candelilla shrub. Grown without chemicals or wild harvested.
Cocoa Butter provides moisturizing qualities, is a natural preservative, rich in Vitamin E and has a faint, pleasant scent. (13)
Hemp Seed Oil is an emollient extremely rich in essential fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is also one of the only oils to contain the direct metabolites of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is particularly a critical fatty essential oil important for healthy skin. Hemp seed oil is a highly effective skin care and cosmetic product. Loving Naturals Sunscreen Stick
Our sunscreen stick is newly added to our product line after a multitude of requests from customers. This water resistant, moisturizing stick, provides superior UVA and UVB protection. It is great to use along side our sunscreen lotion and can be used for the whole body, but most prefer to use it for the face, neck and shoulders. A note about coated zinc oxide:
Many leading sunscreen companies that consider themselves natural and safe use a coated zinc oxide with a nanoparticle size of 70-200, which is formulated by BASF, The Chemical Company. The coating is called triethoxycaprylylsilane, also known as silicone. They like to say that coated zinc oxide is safer than uncoated because it protects against photoreactivity. Regular zinc oxide is considered completely photostable. Zinc oxide nanoparticles, on the other hand are very photoreactive and therefore can cause the formation of harmful free radicals when exposed to sunlight just as the titanium dioxide can. This coated zinc oxide has gone untested for safety and poses serious health risks, which have not been disproved. Among these are the possibilities that at 70 nanometers it could be absorbed into the body, not to mention what possible risks the coating itself could pose. It is questionable whether this coating prevents the wonderful health benefits of regular zinc oxide to work on your skin at all.
A note about Titanium Dioxide:
Many sunscreen companies that consider themselves natural and safe use titanium dioxide. After doing our own research, we became very uncomfortable with this ingredient. It is a mineral like zinc oxide, but it is highly photoreactive, meaning it generates harmful free radicals when it reacts with light and can even cause a severe burn, worse than if no sunscreen was used. Irradiated particles of titanium dioxide can cause oxidative damage to DNA, which can lead to the development of skin cancers. (7)(8)(21)
A note about Nanoparticals:
A nanometer is used to define the diameter of a fine particle. Fine particles cover a range between 100 and 2500 nanometers. Ultrafine particles or nanoparticles are sized between 1 and 100 nanometers.
Many sunscreen companies that consider themselves natural and safe use nanoparticle zinc oxide and choose not to disclose this fact. There are numerous concerns regarding the use of nanotechnology, specifically related to skin care products. Most of these are due to the high surface to volume ratio, which can make the particles very reactive or catalytic. They are also able to pass through cell membranes in organisms, and their interactions with biological systems are relatively unknown. (9)
The nanoparticle, zinc oxide, is used because it is so ultrafine it goes on transparent. We don't believe this effect is worth the risk. We also believe that, though our sunscreen has a slight white tint to it, this is very helpful in applying to your children and yourselves so that you can see if you have missed any spots. Once the sun has warmed the skin, the tint can hardly be seen. This will vary depending on skin tone and how heavy the sunscreen is applied.
